Can Exercise Alone Help You Lose Weight?
Mar 04, 2025"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own." – 1 Corinthians 6:19
As Christian men, we are called to be good stewards of everything God has given us—including our bodies. Many of us work hard in our careers, lead our families, and serve in our communities, but when it comes to our health, we often wonder: Is exercise alone enough to lose weight?
Let’s Look at the Numbers
A solid resistance training session might burn 200-300 calories, plus an additional 100 calories throughout the day due to increased metabolism. If you lift weights three times per week, this adds up to 900-1,200 calories burned per week.
That might sound like a lot, but consider this:
- These numbers only apply to high-volume training (3 sets of 10 reps per exercise).
- Lower-volume training (4 sets of 3-5 reps) burns significantly fewer calories.
- Even at 1,000 extra calories burned per week, that’s only 143 calories per day—less than a single caffe latte (190 calories).
- Over time, as your body adapts to exercise, it burns fewer calories for the same effort.
So, What’s the Solution?
Exercise is important, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Sustainable weight loss happens when we combine movement with nutrient-dense eating habits, consistency, and a mindset shift toward honoring our health.
"Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." – 1 Corinthians 10:31
When we stop viewing fitness and nutrition as separate battles and instead integrate them into a God-honoring lifestyle, we experience real, lasting transformation.
Faith, Health, and Stewardship
Our bodies are vessels for the work God has called us to do. Taking care of them is not about vanity—it’s about having the strength, mobility, and energy to lead, serve, and fulfill our purpose.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." – Philippians 4:13
Start with small, intentional steps. Move with purpose. Eat with discipline. Approach your health with faith. And watch how God works through you in ways you never imagined.
What’s one habit you can change today to better honor your body? Let’s start there.
